Friends of order are wondering what the difference between a toad and a frog is? Here's a little explanation.

Toads and frogs are both amphibians but belong to different families and have distinct characteristics that set them apart.
Skin
- Toads have dry, rough, warty skin. This helps them retain moisture and protects them from dehydration when they are on land.
- Frogs have smooth, moist and often shiny skin. They have thinner skin that is more dependent on moisture and they need to be close to water.
Body shape
- Toads have a stockier and shorter body with short hind legs. Their legs are adapted for walking or jumping short distances.
- Frogs have a slimmer and more streamlined body with long hind legs that are strongly muscled, making them adept at jumping long distances.
Place of residence
- Toads prefer drier environments and can often be found far from water. However, they return to water to lay their eggs.
- Frogs prefer moist environments and are usually found near water or in moist forests. They need water for both their survival and reproduction.
Egg laying
- Toads lay their eggs in long chains or strings in stagnant water.
- Frogs lay their eggs in clumps or masses in water.
Movement
- Toads move mostly by walking or making short hops. They are not as skilled at jumping as frogs.
- Frogs are excellent jumpers and can make long, powerful jumps thanks to their long hind legs.
Toxicity
- Toads have glands that secrete toxic substances as a defense against predators. This makes them unappetizing or dangerous to eat.
- Some frogs also have toxic skin secretions, but this is less common than in toads.
Appearance
- Toads usually have a wider and flatter head shape with larger glands behind the eyes.
- Frogs have a more pointed head shape and lack the large glands that toads have.
