The history of the Advent candlestick
The Advent candlestick has a rich and varied history that dates back to the 19th century. The traditional Advent candlestick originated in Germany, where the first candlestick was created in 1839 by Johann Hinrich Wichern, a Protestant pastor. Wichern worked with poor children and to help them count down the days until Christmas, he made a large wooden wheel with 24 candles, one for each day of December until Christmas Eve.
This original Advent candlestick was much larger and more complex than the candlesticks we see today. A larger candle was lit every Sunday, while the smaller candles were lit every weekday. The tradition then spread from Germany to other parts of Europe and the world, and during the 20th century the candlestick evolved into the more compact form with four candles, one for each Sunday of Advent, that we are familiar with today.
The Advent candlestick has undergone several changes and adaptations due to cultural and religious influences. In many Nordic countries, the Advent candlestick became an important part of Christmas traditions, and it is often decorated with fir branches, red ribbons and other Christmas ornaments to create a festive atmosphere in homes.
Eventually, electric Advent candle holders came into use, making it easier and safer to keep candles lit for longer periods. These modern versions of the Advent candle holder have become a popular decoration in windows and on tables around the world, symbolizing hope, peace, joy and love, which are central themes of Advent and Christmas celebrations.
